Deepfakes and Crime

Deepfake cybercrime is a major problem. More and more hackers are using it to steal your identity. Read more here.

With the rise of deepfake technology, cybercriminals have found a new way to hide their activities. Deepfake technology makes it possible to manipulate a video or image so that authentic material appears to have been altered. This deepfake technology allows cybercriminals to create a deepfake of someone else's identity. They can use this other identity to scam other people. Read all about deepfake cybercrime in this blog.

What's possible with deepfakes?

Criminals often use deepfake technology to discredit their victims or to steal their personal information. Deepfake technology makes it possible to create a video of someone saying something they never said, or a video of someone taking part in illegal activity. It's also possible to create deepfake photos of someone participating in an illegal activity or assuming a different identity.

A concrete example is creating a forged identity document or bank card belonging to someone else. This gives criminals access to that person's bank account and other personal information. Criminals also use deepfake technology to commit identity theft.

How do you prevent deepfake cybercrime?

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent deepfake cybercrime. It's important to secure your personal information as well as possible and stay alert for suspicious activity. It's also important to block or delete suspicious emails and messages. If you suspect your identity has been stolen, contact the police immediately.

You can recognize a deepfake during a video call by asking the person to hold their hand in front of their face. The technology loses the touchpoints/recognition points on the face, causing the deepfake to become detached from the person pretending to be someone else.
