Recognizing Fake News
Fake news and online deception are a major problem. Cyber security is enormously important. We tell you more about recognizing fake news.
Fake news is a major problem today. It can spread misleading information with the aim of convincing people of untruths. That's why it's important to know how to recognize it. With these tips, we hope fake news will be taken less seriously, and that you'll be better able to judge whether news items are relevant and/or contain untruths.
Fake news source?
The first step in identifying fake news is checking the source. If the message comes from a source that isn't reliable, there's a good chance the message isn't true. Look at the website and check whether it seems trustworthy before drawing conclusions.
Do multiple sources confirm the story?
Another way to check whether a story is true is by comparing it with other sources. If the story can't be found anywhere else, it's less reliable. Of course, a news site can be the first to report something, but over time, other sites should also start picking it up.
Sources should also be mentioned in the reports. Where does the news come from, who first put it out into the world? Do multiple eyewitnesses report it, or has it been confirmed by an official body? The more sources, the more reliable the report.
Too good to be true?
Is a story you're reading too good to be true? Or do you have doubts while reading it? Then there's a good chance the story is inaccurate... Fake news is a major problem we all deal with. By using the tips above, you can recognize a lot of fake news and avoid being misled by it. If you're unsure about a story, do some research, and avoid being deceived by fake news.
With a dose of common sense and by consulting multiple sources, you can recognize false reports. Don't let yourself be misled online, and think before you share news further.
