5 Cyber Security Tips
5 free tips to boost Cyber Security at YOUR organization. These cybersecurity tips are quick and easy to apply.
Cyber Security is becoming more essential by the day, but unfortunately it still plays no role at all in many organizations. Cybercriminals are working ever more cunningly, and their focus is increasingly shifting to SMEs. According to research by SIDN, 22% of SMEs have fallen victim to cybercrime. Think, for example, of a ransomware attack, where valuable data files are encrypted and large sums of ransom are then demanded.
To prevent ransomware and/or other forms of hacking, your organization can invest more in Cyber Security. Right now, Cyber Security is often still not a hot topic, and investment usually only happens once it's too late.
With these five cyber security tips, your organization can raise its cyber security in an accessible way.
1. Train your staff
Every hacker knows that "the human" is the weakest link within an organization. Human error is unavoidable in any process, and cyber security is no exception. By creating awareness among employees, you and your colleagues can handle various dangerous situations thoughtfully.
Does every employee think twice before clicking a link? Do you and your colleagues actually check a URL properly before leaving sensitive information?
Forewarned is forearmed!
2. Keep your software up to date
Software updates aren't there for nothing. Many people think they're only about adding new features or making a system run faster. During software updates, Cyber Security is also improved, and errors and/or weaknesses are fixed or reinforced.
Software companies lead the way when it comes to cyber security and carry out various tests. Often these are external agencies (ethical hackers such as Tozetta) that actually try to expose vulnerabilities in the software (Penetration testing).
If you keep your software up to date, your organization is more likely to be better equipped against hackers.
3. Build and maintain a secure website
Websites are often built by external agencies. Every website builder handles cyber security and the measures they take in their own way. From experience, we know this sometimes leaves something to be desired. Always bring up cyber security in a conversation with your website builder. An external agency that has this well in hand can explain in detail what they do to protect your data.
Remember that in the event of a data breach, it's your organization that bears the consequences โ both financially and materially โ not the website builder.
4. Have a penetration test carried out
Have your websites and/or (mobile) applications tested. Groups of ethical hackers can find vulnerabilities before hackers with bad intentions do. When Tozetta's hackers carry out a pentest (penetration test), vulnerabilities are made visible. The vulnerabilities that come to light during a penetration test are delivered in a report and explained by the ethical hackers where necessary. They can support/advise you in resolving the issues.
By testing websites & (mobile) applications, vulnerabilities are found and fixed. This means the front door isn't left open at the moment real hackers come knocking.
Are you waiting until it's too late?
5. Use strong passwords
Combining a password manager with two-factor authentication is a must. Make sure passwords aren't reused across multiple places, and make sure employees are informed/trained about this.
A few unrelated consecutive words and/or alternating characters and numbers can make for a very strong password. Curious how to create a strong password? We wrote a blog about it!
